Background

The term "sex positive" is not new. As early as the 1970s, it emerged in feminist discussions about how society could be shaped and changed towards a peaceful, open and equal coexistence. In the 21st century, the term has picked up new momentum and has finally arrived in the social discourse on equality and sexuality.

Whether in Berlin, Cologne or Hamburg - so-called sex-positive parties and events are now everywhere. They see themselves as "safer spaces", as protected places where sexual acts are not mandatory, but still possible. The focus is always on the respect and mindfulness of everyone present towards sexual orientations, forms of expression and bodies.

"There is an infinite variety of sexual practices," writes sexologist Laura Mérrit in an essay about the new sex-positive lifestyle. But everything is fine as long as things between adults are consensual. And she adds: "The sex-positive movement is now broad-based and can be described with the following characteristics from the areas of health, sexuality, feminist pornography, sex work and BDSM: Sexual freedom is part of the general freedom efforts."

But to what extent is the new sex-positive life noticeable in Germany? Our study would like to highlight the sexual life in German cities - and answer the question: Which city is particularly characterized by its sexual freedom?

Our approach

In order to arrive at reliable results, we included a wide variety of data in the analysis. For each city, we looked at which parameters are particularly pronounced with regard to a sex-positive life and measured by the number of inhabitants.

This includes sex shops, swinger clubs and brothels as well as the number of sex workers and sex work organizations on site. The subject of LGBTQIA+ also plays a major role in our study. Because: The more visible and present queer events and premises are in a city, the more open the attitude towards life there can be assessed.

Education is essential to the sex-positive movement. Therefore, we have also included health organizations, medical centers and clinics in our ranking that specialize in information and prevention of sexually transmitted diseases and HIV. This also includes PrEP dispensaries.

We have assigned points for each parameter, the higher the expression, the higher the value and the placement in our ranking. Some interesting results have emerged. You can find out more about each city in our top 25 by clicking on the map or in the list.

Why is sex positivity so important?

Sexual freedom is an important part of the general feeling of freedom. She helps many people to free themselves from taboos and restrictive role stereotypes and to realize their own wishes, ideas and dreams. A sex-positive attitude does not judge what is right or wrong, but rather encourages each individual to embark on a search for their own authentic path.

Sexual freedom is of inestimable value for modern societies, because: How extensive the sexual development possibilities of the individual are in their area says a lot about the openness of the local society.

Freedom and a sex-positive life are closely related.

Everyone is free, but mindful - that's how the motto of the sex-positive movement could be summed up. But a look at legal history shows that sex-positive life was suppressed in Germany for a long time. Until 1970, homosexual or highly sexually active women and young girls were sent to reform schools. Abortion has only been legal since 1974. It was not until 1994 that the so-called gay paragraph 175, which had severely restricted same-sex life and love in Germany for a long time, was removed from the code of law. Up until 1997, marital rape was still not punishable, and up until 2016, rape was only considered such if the victim had demonstrably put up strong resistance, which experience has shown is often not done due to fear of death.

What can we conclude from this? First of all this: Universal freedom and sex-positivity have a lot more to do with each other than some would think at first. Without one, the other would probably not exist. People can only live a truly free and self-determined life where a sex-positive life is possible and exists.

But let's take a look at the data: In which German city is sex-positive life particularly pronounced these days?

The winners of the ranking

Who would have thought? The capital of sex-positive life in Germany is: Cologne. The Rhenish metropolis underscores its cosmopolitan, liberal image in our ranking and achieves the absolute top position. Mannheim follows in second place. Measured by the number of inhabitants, there are nowhere else as many gay events and locations as in the city in south-west Germany. Third place: Fribourg. The small town in Breisgau is particularly impressive because of its many different opportunities for sexual development and almost ideal health care. And of course Berlin shouldn't be left out of the top 10 most sex-positive cities in Germany. Sex-positive life has a very long tradition there. As early as the 1920s, Berlin was world-famous for its sinful, sexually liberated party life - and even today, around 100 years later, our study shows that Berlin is still pretty sexy.

Just missing the podium, but in a very good fourth place: Osnabrück. The big city in Lower Saxony achieves very good results, especially in the categories “Sex Shops”, “Gay Pride Events” and “Health”.

The surprises

It may come as a surprise to many, but it is primarily the smaller cities such as Chemnitz, Magdeburg, Mannheim, Osnabrück and Wiesbaden that stand out positively in our ranking. Very few would have expected them to be that far ahead. But they are proof that sex-positive life does not only take place in the pulsating metropolises. With Chemnitz and Magdeburg, two East German cities are also represented in the top 10 and show that sex positivity is by no means just a West German phenomenon. Both cities are particularly popular because of their numerous sex shops, brothels and sex work organizations.

The taillights

Leverkusen, Solingen, Mülheim an der Ruhr – even if these three cities end up at the bottom of our ranking, that doesn’t mean that there is no sex-positive life at all. On the contrary: While Mülheim an der Ruhr and Leverkusen are particularly popular among sex workers, Solingen scores well with its local swingers club. And that makes it clear: in almost every German city there seems to be a frivolous, sex-positive life. So it's up to everyone to discover and try out this life for themselves. One thing is certain: the sex-positive movement has finally arrived in Germany.

German Most Sexually Liberated Cities

Methodology

In order to create a ranking of the most sex-positive cities in Germany, the country's 50 largest cities were examined for various factors. This includes the number of sex shops, swingers clubs, gay bars, gay pride and LGBTAIQ+ events. The treatment of sex workers was also taken into account in the study by determining the number of sex workers, sex work organizations and the number of local brothels. In addition, the topic of health and education played an important role in the study. For this purpose, the number of sexual counseling and health offers as well as the number of PrEP accompanying offers on site were determined.

The investigation was completed on April 30, 2022.

Factors, definitions and sources

Research area 1: Sex-positive lifestyle Sex

shops: Information on the number of sex shops was taken from the recommendation portal Yelp.

Swinger clubs: Information about the number of swinger clubs was taken from the dating portal Joyclub. With more than 1500 registered clubs and institutions, the local swinger club database is one of the largest in Europe.

Research Field 2: LGBTIAQ+

Gay Pride Events: Information about the number of gay pride events was taken from Google's local event overview.

LGBTIAQ+ Events: Information on the number of local LGBTIAQ+ events was taken from Google's local events overview.

LGBTIAQ+ bars and clubs: Information about the number of LGBTIAQ+ bars and clubs was taken from queer information and scene media. These include the websites of inqueery, Patroc and travelgay.

Research field 3: Sex work

Brothels: Information about the number of brothels was taken from the red light directory lustmap .

Sex workers: Information about the number of sex workers on site was taken from the erotic advertising portal Erobella . With more than 10,000 registered sex workers, the portal is one of the largest escort websites in Germany.

Organisations: Information on the number of organizations working on behalf of sex workers was obtained from two sources: the Sex Workers Association portal Services4Sexworkers. Both sites are among the most important information portals for sex workers on the internet.

Research Area 4: Sexual Health Health

Organizations: Information on local health organizations working on STDs, HIV and sexuality was provided to the HIV Compass removed. We would like to thank the Deutsche Aidshilfe for making the material available.

PrEP: PrEP is an HIV prevention prophylaxis for people who are HIV negative but are at increased risk of contracting HIV. Information on doctors and institutions that are particularly dedicated to this topic was taken from the German Association of Resident Doctors in the Care of HIV-Infected eV (dagnä) .

Calculation and scoring

In order to calculate a ranking, all the results of the examined influencing factors were standardized on a point scale from 0 to 100, with population sizes also taken into account (i.e. all results were divided by total population, thus creating a per capita score). The city that performed best in each factor received a score of 100. The city that performed worst in each factor received a score of 0. All other cities ranked in between according to their score.

Finally, an additional coefficient was applied to each individual factor based on its perceived importance. Then all points were added up, resulting in the final rankings.
